Raw milk makes me think of James Herriot, back in the '30's and '40's, describing what it was like in the field, testing cows for tuberculosis. Nowadays if you Google 'raw milk' and tuberculosis you get two different stories. The pro raw-milkies actually claim it helps *protect* against TB. But then...one such proponent is 'Dr' Joseph Mercola, one of the biggest quacks out there. Anytime he says something is good for you, I immediately have doubts.

I doubt the raw milk cured your tummy. Isn't milk actually bad for the tummy, at least when you are not feeling well already, because the stomach acid curdles it and makes it more upset? Anyway, good for you playing it safe and NOT feeding it to the kids!!It just seems risky. Didn't you tell me a few years ago that the worst case of food poisoning (or some kind of food bourne illness) you ever got, was from eating organic potatoes or something like that? It would be different if you had a cow in your back yard and took good care of her and milked her yourself, but somehow I don't think your neighbors would appreciate that.

Speaking of milk...how pricey is it getting in California, or do the fact that 'happy cows come from California' (poor miserable overmedicated beasts) mean your prices haven't gone up as much? The cheapest gallon of whole milk in the new Lucky store I stopped at the other day cost 4.09. "Lucky Means Low Prices", sheesh. I actually did get some great deals on veggies, but I refused to pay that for milk and made Tian Bo pick a cheaper gallon up on his way home from work the next day.

Nina Plank would call me a heretic or maybe just a fool: I buy the big boxes of powdered milk at Food4Less and reconstitute it for cooking and putting in my coffee. Well-chilled, I actually don't taste the difference between reconstituted milk and nonfat milk from the store, and it's cheaper and lest wasteful this way since I can mix up a quart at a time and don't have to throw away so many jugs.
